Before a hazelnut can be roasted, quite a few things have to happen. From turning to cracking. It is discussed in the article below.

How To Roast Hazelnut In The Oven?

Roasting raw hazelnuts with or without skin has its advantages. You decide which oil you want to use, which spices to add and whether you want to roast with or without salt.

Remove the baking tray from the oven and preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Place a sheet of baking paper on the tray and then place the hazelnuts on the baking paper. The hazelnuts should not lie on top of each other, but next to each other in 1 layer.

Place the baking tray in the oven and roast the hazelnuts for 6 minutes. Then remove the baking sheet from the oven and toss the hazelnuts together. Then place the baking sheet back in the oven. Roast the hazelnuts again for 6 minutes.

Now the hazelnuts are cooked and have a nice brown color. If you want to make sure they are cooked, take a hazelnut from the baking tray and taste. Tasting is always the best method of determining whether something is cooked.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and place the hazelnuts in the bowl or place them on a board. The hazelnuts must now cool down for at least an hour. The oils are released during roasting and during this rest period the hazelnuts can absorb the oils again.

How To Roast Hazelnuts In A Pan?

Roasting the hazelnuts in a pan gives them a wonderful taste. Again, use raw and skinless hazelnuts.

Put the hazelnuts in the pan and make sure that the hazelnuts are not on top of each other. Place the skillet on the heat source and heat the skillet over medium-high. Continue to toss the hazelnuts every minute.

Keep a close eye on the hazelnuts. There is now a real hazelnut smell and the hazelnuts are turning brown. Now keep moving the hazelnuts, because before you know it they will burn.

Roasting hazelnuts in this way takes 5-10 minutes.

When they are ready, remove the pan from the heat and let the hazelnuts cool on a plate.

How to Peel Hazelnuts?

If your hazelnuts are roasted with their skins, they still need to be removed. This goes like this.

Place all the hazelnuts between two tea towels and roll the hazelnuts between the tea towels for about two minutes. If all goes well, all the sheets are now loose.

How to Crack or Peel Hazelnuts?

If you have store bought hazelnuts, they have probably already been cracked, skinned and roasted. Hazelnuts you’ve picked still need to be cracked.

This cracking can happen in many ways. The outside of the nut must be broken. You can use a nutcracker for this and crack the nuts. If there is no nutcracker present, you have to be inventive! A heavy object works wonders in this case; a hammer, a heavy cutting slice basically anything that is a bit heavy.

If you are not using a nutcracker, place the nuts between two tea towels. Now it’s a matter of hitting. Break the shell of the nuts. Look after a few beats and take out the cracked nuts. Repeat until all nuts are cracked.

How to Store Hazelnuts?

Hazelnuts are best kept in the shell. To do this, place them in a dry cool place in a container or bag where sufficient ventilation is possible. This way you can store hazelnuts for 2 years.

Peeled hazelnuts can be stored in a closed container for 2 to 4 weeks. They then lose quality and taste.

Hazelnut Raw Food

With the rise of ‘Raw food’, hazelnut is also in the spotlight. The hazelnut is a very healthy nut and you can eat it raw. These raw nuts are for sale in a nut bar. When you have collected nuts yourself, the nuts are still in the shell and the hard skin is still around it. You must remove this. How you do this is described above.
