What is mincemeat?

Mincemeat is originally a residual product, from leftover meat that was cut into small pieces to make mincemeat. According to the food and product authority, the fat percentage should not exceed 25%

A butcher is not allowed to just mix all types of (residual) meat to make minced meat, there are rules on what can and cannot be used.

You can make minced meat from beef or pork, but also from chicken or mutton. The meat chunks are passed through a meat grinder and pressed through small holes.

Which ground beef is the healthiest?

According to the Commodities Act, each mincemeat may contain a fat percentage of a maximum of 25%, minced meat can be made from several animals. Each type of meat has its own nutritional values.

The healthiest mincemeat comes from chicken, because it contains less fat. It often turns out that the smartest choice is organic: this mincemeat contains the most nutrients.

You have mincebeef and pork, half and half and chicken or mutton, but also vegetarian. In the table below you will find the nutritional value of each type, and how healthy this meat is for you.

Types of mincemeat

There are so many types of minced meat, it is impossible to name all variants in this article.

Mincebeef and tartare

Beef in the Netherlands comes from dairy and beef cows of different breeds. Unprocessed lean beef fits into a healthy diet . Of the meats, beef contains many nutrients vitamin B12 and is relatively rich in iron.

Ground beef contains on average less than 240 kilocalories per 100 grams, and consists of almost 20 grams of protein. This makes beef a slightly healthier choice than half-and-half. You don’t always have to choose the fewest calories, because that is not necessarily healthier or better. Your body also needs fats.

The beef with the least fat is tartar. The difference between mincemeat and tartar is in the percentage of fat. Tartare is a piece of leaner meat (8% fat). Tartar is also turned once more often to refine the structure.

Is ground beef from the butcher healthier? (Or slimmer)

Mincemeat from the butcher is often less fat and healthier than at the supermarket, which is logical in itself and has been in the news often enough.

Butchers process different parts of the meat, when boning. The NEVO table shows that structural ground beef from the butcher is even leaner than lean ground beef from the supermarket!

At one butcher, no more than two percent fat was found, comparable to chicken and steak. The half-and-half (half pork and half beef) at all butchers was also a lot leaner than that from the supermarket.

Alternatives to mincemeat

More and more people want to live a healthier life and eat less meat, this may also be because they think it is sad that animals are slaughtered.

It is not necessary to eat meat, you can replace it with other products. Vega mincemeat is a great alternative for your health, meat is also often replaced by zucchini or beans as an alternative in a quiche or wok dish.

To prepare mincemeat even healthier, you can replace frying in butter with, for example, oil or margarine. It contains a lot less fats and carbohydrates, sometimes small adjustments to your preparation are a good way if you want to lose weight in a healthy way.
