  4. Potatoes can be stored in the freezer for 6 months after blanching.

Storing whole fresh sweet potatoes, storing and preparing pieces of sweet potatoes, everything is discussed in this article.

How to Store Sweet Potatoes?

The sweet potatoes that we consume here in our country all come from tropical areas such as Mexico. The sweet potatoes are therefore used to warm temperatures and do not like cold. That’s why you don’t keep a fresh, uncut sweet potato in the fridge.

The best storage place for sweet potatoes is a dark, cool place where it is about 12 degrees. In the past, this was always the cellar closet. Since most houses do not have a basement closet, it is best to keep the sweet potato in the kitchen, as dark and as cool as possible.

You can keep the sweet potatoes for about 3 weeks after purchase.

Preserve Peeled Sweet Potatoes

Peeled sweet potatoes have different storage advice. Sweet potato is a root vegetable and these are not fond of cold temperatures, they will quickly rot.

A root vegetable and therefore also the sweet potatoes can be kept in the refrigerator when it has been peeled. However, the storage time is short, approximately 2 days.

Fill a plastic container with water and place the peeled sweet potatoes in it. Put the lid on the container and put it in the fridge.

Sometimes a solution is to place the sweet potato in a damp cloth in the refrigerator.

Do not wrap the potato in plastic wrap. The foil does not let air through and this will cause the sweet potato to rot.

I have another piece of advice when you want to use the sweet potato again in another dish; Look, feel, smell, and taste.

Look at the color to see if there are any rotten spots on it. Feel if the sweet potato still feels firm and is not soft. Smell if it still smells fresh and good. If it smells musty or stuffy, throw it away. In this case, no tasting is necessary! Use your gut to determine if the sweet potato is still good.

Preserve half Sweetpotatoes

You can also keep half a sweet potato that has not been further cut or processed.

It is also best to place this potato with the cut side in a bowl of water and place it in the refrigerator. You can then keep the potato for a while, about 3 days.

If you want to process the potatoes, follow this advice: Look at the color to see if there are any rotten spots on it. Feel if the sweet potatoes still feel firm and are not soft. Smell if it still smells fresh and good. If it smells musty or stuffy, throw it away.

Keep Boiled Sweet Potatoes

Boiled sweet potatoes are a different story.

Cooking has changed the structure of the potato. This ensures that this product should not be stored outside the refrigerator.

Put the remaining, boiled sweet potatoes in a plastic container with a lid and place this container in the refrigerator. You can keep the potato for about 2 days.

If you want to use the sweet potatoes in another dish, take the following advice to heart; Check whether the potato still looks good, when you open the container, smell that there is no strange odor coming from it. If you are not sure yet, try if the taste is still good.

Keep Sweet Potatoes in the Freezer

You can also store sweet potatoes in the freezer. To do this properly, so that the potato is still tasty when you take it out of the freezer, a few steps are required.

We first have to peel and clean the potato. Then we peel the sweet potato. When this is done, we first cut the sweet potatoes into thick slices and then into cubes. After this, we put the cubes of sweet potatoes in a pan with boiling water and boil the potatoes for about 3 minutes.

Then the sweet potatoes are removed from the pan and drained in a colander. Rinse the potatoes immediately under a cold tap, cool the potatoes well.

This whole process is called blanching. Cooking the potato kills the bacteria. The rapid cooling then stops the cooking process.

Now put the potatoes in a sealable bag and put this bag in the freezer. You can now keep them for at least another 6 months.
