How to remove stains of scotch tape from glass quickly
Scotch tape is a handy thing, always needed in the house, but after using it, traces are sure to remain on the glass. And if they are not the first freshness, then such a picture has an unsightly appearance, since dust and dirt collect on the adhesive base.
What not to do
When cleaning a glass surface from stuck tape, it is necessary to do it in such a way as not to scratch it or spoil it completely. Water or a damp cloth will not help to wash off tape from glass. It is necessary to choose more effective methods, but:
- In no case should you heat the glass. Such advice is, to put it mildly, incorrect and dangerous. If the glass is heated unevenly, it may crack.
- It is not recommended to use soda, hard brushes, sponges, scrapers, or any abrasives for these purposes. The surface will be permanently damaged and no cleaning will help it.
- The idea of using a solvent or acetone for this purpose requires careful approach. The whole point is that the adhesive base does not dissolve completely from their effect, smearing all over the glass and creating even more problems. It is necessary to ensure that the adhesive from the tape is completely removed, without leaving the smallest particles.
- When choosing a cleaner, you should opt for solutions with a liquid consistency that do not require dissolving the granules.
Since all chemicals are toxic, care must be taken when using them. It is necessary to use gloves to protect your hands, as well as a protective face mask if the caustic volatile elements of the product used are particularly irritating.
What and how is useful for cleaning glass
There are a large number of special window cleaning products that can also remove traces of scotch tape. In this case:
- First, if possible, carefully remove any remaining adhesive tape using a blade.
- The contaminated surface is treated with the selected cleaning solution and left to act for 15 minutes. Then the surface is wiped with a clean cloth.

If the stain is very fresh, it is worth using vegetable oil for cleaning. You just need to lubricate the stains with it and leave it to act for 10-15 minutes, and then clean the softened dirt with a damp cloth. Remove the remains with a dry napkin or sponge.

Checked by the editors: The furniture has old, dusty and dirty marks from scotch tape (a children’s musical educational poster was attached). The surface was generously greased with regular vegetable oil. Left to act for 15 minutes. Wiped with a damp cloth.
For the sake of purity of the experiment, a sponge with hard bristles or cleaning powder were not used (although I really wanted to). In some places I had to go over it with oil again. The result is in the photo below. Conclusion: the method really works even on old stains.
Essential oil copes with this task very well . And absolutely any will do, since all esters are chemically active substances, here you need to be careful and use rubber gloves. You can also make a mixture of essential and vegetable oil.
When using such products to clean furniture, be sure to test them on an inconspicuous area.
Solvents
To remove the adhesive base, you can try using improvised solvents containing acetone, white spirit or gasoline. When using them, you must take precautions, because volatile substances with a pungent odor can cause at least dizziness. Work with them should be carried out in a room with good ventilation.
Remove dirt with a cotton pad or cloth soaked in the selected product. After wiping the glass with a solvent, after a while thoroughly wash the surface with a glass cleaning spray or a solution with soap.
When using solvents, make sure that the product does not come into contact with plastic surfaces. And importantly: the method is not suitable for cleaning frosted glass.
Alcohol
Absolutely any alcohol-containing liquids will do here. If pure alcohol is chosen for cleaning the surface, it is better to use it in a diluted form.
You just need to wet the sponge in the alcohol solution and wash off the adhesive from the tape. After finishing the procedure, wipe the cleaned surface with a clean cloth.
Among the alternative methods of removal:
Wet the sticky areas with hot water and give some time for the adhesive base to soften. After that, all that remains is to remove any unnecessary residue from the surface. If there are any marks left after this procedure, they can be removed with a regular eraser.
Special products for removing traces of stickers and tape from the office supply or household department are highly effective and easy to use. They will help to wipe off even the most stubborn stains.
Even fresh traces of tape on glass are quite troublesome to get rid of, and if you put off cleaning for some time, you will have to put in much more effort. However, with persistence, you can always achieve the desired result and the glass surface will sparkle with cleanliness.
