How to remove paint stains from jeans
Fresh and slightly dried paint stains are the easiest to remove from jeans. But even if the problem is discovered a week later, the item can be saved. Depending on the type of paint, different methods are used to remove it.
General recommendations
To avoid ruining your favorite jeans, you need to follow some rules that are common to all cleaning methods:
- When wiping a stain, you should move from its edges to the center – this will help avoid streaks;
- do not rub the stained area too hard: it will be more difficult to wash paint off jeans if it penetrates into the deeper layers of the fabric;
- Be sure to try the chosen product on an inconspicuous area of the jeans (the inside of the waistband or the inside of the trouser leg).
Removing fresh stains
First, you should try to remove the top layer of paint. To do this, take a knife or scissors and scrape off as much as possible with the sharp edge of the blade. To avoid damaging the fabric, it is better to choose a slightly dull knife.
Many fresh stains of water-based paint can be simply washed off. The same applies to acrylic ones. It is advisable to hold such stains under a stream of warm water before washing. In addition to powder, you need to add a stain remover to the washing machine and set the “with soaking” mode.
When hand washing, lather the stain with 72% laundry soap, leave for half an hour. Then rub with a brush and wash.
When choosing a stain remover, pay attention to the recommendations for use. A product that is not suitable for denim fabric can ruin the color of the trousers.
There are several ways to remove fresh oil paint stains.
- Vegetable oil. This method is most effective when the stain has just appeared. Using a cotton pad or toothbrush, apply oil generously to the stained area. After 15 minutes, you can try to scrub off the paint. If necessary, repeat the procedure until the stain has completely disappeared.
- Dishwashing liquid. The gel is applied with a sponge to the problem area and left for 20 minutes or longer. Then you need to treat the stain with a stiff brush until it is removed.
- In this method, the butter is mixed in equal parts with quality washing powder. The resulting mixture is applied to the dirty area with a toothbrush and rubbed in. It can be washed off after 30 minutes.
- You need to soak a cotton pad well and apply it to the stain for 10-15 minutes. After the specified time, rinse the fabric with water.
- Sodium borate and kefir. Combine 30 ml of 9% vinegar with 55 g of borax, add 75 ml of fat kefir (at least 3.2%) and mix thoroughly. Apply the mixture to the stain and leave to dry. Then do the same procedure on the reverse side. Then rub the treated area with a brush and wash the jeans.
- Tar soap. The stain should be wetted with water and soaped thoroughly. Put the trousers aside for 3 hours and repeat the procedure several times. Between soapings, the problem area should be treated with a hard brush.
- You can simply “draw” the dirty area with chalk. Then shake off the remains and repeat the manipulation several times. It will be more effective to apply a mixture of equal parts of crushed chalk and solvent. After the composition dries, you need to brush it off.
To remove fresh paint from white and light-colored jeans, use acetone or acetone-containing liquid. Rub the stain with a cotton pad soaked in the substance from the edges to the center until it disappears. Then wash with the addition of a stain remover for white fabrics.
After using any of the above methods, the trousers must be washed twice.
How to deal with dried paint
First, you need to remove the dried paint layer from the jeans with a blunt knife or a metal brush. If the fabric is relatively thin, it is better to use a wooden spatula.
Old stains from water-based paint are removed in the same way as fresh ones. The manipulations will have to be repeated several times.
Ammonia and vinegar will help effectively remove dried acrylic paint from jeans. To do this:
- Mix 30 g of regular fine salt with 65 ml of 9% vinegar and 50 ml of ammonia.
- Place cellophane on the inside and apply the mixture generously to the stain.
- After 7-10 minutes, the problem area should be cleaned with a brush and the trousers washed. But you should work in a respirator and in a well-ventilated room.
Old traces of various types of paint should be tried to be removed using alcohol and glycerin . The stain is moistened with heated glycerin (10-15 seconds in a microwave oven) and left for 30 minutes. Then wiped with medical alcohol and washed off after 10-15 minutes.
If this method does not work, you can try an alcohol-glycerin mixture. Mix the components in equal proportions and apply generously to the stain. Leave the mixture on the fabric overnight, then wash.
When none of the methods helped
If the above methods do not help, it remains to resort to aggressive substances: gasoline, kerosene, turpentine, white spirit. These products are able to remove ingrained stains, both from water-based and oil paints.
Before using them, it is advisable to soften the stain with glycerin. To do this, mix heated glycerin with water in a 1:1 ratio and generously soak the stained area, leave for about half an hour.
It is better to work with gasoline, turpentine, kerosene, acetone, white spirit outdoors or with an open window. Hands must be protected with rubber gloves.
Further use of aggressive substances step by step:
- place a piece of cotton or other natural fabric, preferably light-colored, on the back of the stain;
- wet the contaminated area with the selected product and leave for 20-30 minutes;
- using a cotton pad or a piece of foam rubber, clean the paint off the jeans in the direction from the edges of the stain to the center;
- soap the treated area with laundry soap;
- After half an hour, wash the trousers with powder intended for difficult stains.
A mixture of purified gasoline with chalk, or gasoline and white clay will help clean old paint from white and light jeans . Mix the components in equal parts and apply to the stain. When the mixture dries, remove it with a brush, and send the trousers to the wash.
To clean any fabric, only purified lighter gasoline or aviation gasoline can be used.
After the procedures, a light spot may remain on the trousers. You can paint it over with a blue marker, choosing a suitable color, or with special paint for denim. A radical method is to paint the jeans a darker color.
