Can you freeze mozzarella?

Can you freeze mozzarella

Can you freeze mozzarella? Fresh, soft and immaculate, the little Italian white ball that the French love does not keep in the fridge indefinitely. Freezing mozzarella to extend its shelf life: good or bad idea? We answer you.

It is the white gold of Italy. With several million tons produced each year in the Naples region, mozzarella has quickly become the most consumed cheese in the world. The French like it raw, garnished with olive oil, tomatoes and basil, or cooked, in pizzas or even gratins.

Only then, the shelf life of mozzarella is far from infinite. To prolong its life, can it be put in the freezer? The answer is yes!

How to freeze mozzarella?

If your mozzarella ball is still in its original packaging, simply place the sealed bag and as is, in your freezer. The juice it contains will allow him to keep it.

If your cheese is already started, and you have kept this famous juice, transfer everything to a closed freezer bag before freezing it.

And if your mozzarella is no longer in its juice, don’t panic. You can cut your ball into slices and put them in the freezer for a few minutes on parchment paper. Once the slices have hardened, simply wrap them in a freezer bag and place them back in the freezer.

How long can you keep mozzarella in the freezer?

In the refrigerator, your sealed bag will only keep for one to two weeks and if it has been opened, it must be consumed within 48 hours.

If you put it in the freezer, however, mozzarella can keep for up to six months. Practical, right?

How to thaw mozzarella?

To thaw the holy grail of Italian cheese, you better anticipate your move. In order not to alter its taste, take it out of the freezer a few hours before use and place it in your refrigerator to avoid breaking the cold chain.

Above all, avoid defrosting in the microwave, which would alter its texture too much.
