How to Marinate Tofu? Several possibilities
Tofu is a protein-rich product that contains little taste. By using herbs and marinating them, you can flavor the Tofu. Tofu is very versatile and it can be a lot of fun to try out different ways of marinating.
How to Marinate Tofu?

Tofu itself has little taste. It takes on the flavor of the spices you use while cooking. There are several ways to marinate Tofu. Have fun marinating and preparing Tofu.

Tofu Pressing
Tofu is in a container with moisture to keep it longer. It is therefore obvious that the Tofu is full of water. When you have a dish from which you have to squeeze Tofu, you should do the following:
Remove the Tofu from the container in which you bought the Tofu. Cut the Tofu into slices on a cutting board but keep the liquid that the Tofu was in. You can use this to save the Tofu you have left over.
You can now place the tofu in a tofu press and let the moisture leak out or you can use utensils to press the tofu.
Place the tofu on a clean tea towel or a few sheets of kitchen paper and place it on the cutting board. Fold the tea towel over the tofu again and place a heavy cutting board (or cookbooks for example) on top.
Now as much moisture as possible is squeezed out of the Tofu. Let this stand for about 30 minutes.
You can also press the Tofu in its entirety, but I find the slices a bit drier and nicer to work with. There are tofu presses on the market that can squeeze a whole tofu out.
With the first dish below, there is no need to squeeze Tofu. This Tofu dish resembles an egg dish because of the color and taste of egg due to the spices.
Tofu Marinating Indonesian
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 ½ tsp Cumin powder
- 1 tsp paprika powder
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Laos powder
- 1 pinch Pepper
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 dash of soy sauce Manis
- 1 tsp Sambal Manis
- ½ Lemon and the juice of it
Cut the Tofu into slices and squeeze out the water as described above.
Then cut the Tofu slices into cubes of about 1 centimeter. Mix all the dry spices together and then add the Tofu. Stir again and make sure the Tofu is well seasoned. Now mix the wet ingredients together, without the oil, and add this substance to the Tofu. Mix all this together to marinate the Tofu. Let the Tofu marinate for 1 hour to allow the herbs and other seasonings to absorb well.
After 1 hour you can fry the Tofu in some olive oil. Marinating makes them nice and brown, crispy and tasty.
Tofu Marinating Ketjap
- 6 tbsp soy sauce Manis
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 clove Garlic
- Piece of ginger, 1.5 cm or more as desired
- Half red pepper
- tofu
Do this operation an hour in advance, otherwise you will be waiting and preparing the food will take longer….
Press the Tofu as described above in the chapter Pressing Tofu.
Now you can make the soy sauce marinade. Remove the seeds from the red pepper and finely chop the pepper and garlic. Peel and grate the ginger and add this to the lemon juice and the soy sauce. Stir well and then cut the Tofu into cubes of equal size. Then put the Tofu in the marinade for half an hour.
When the Tofu is marinated, we will fry the Tofu. Heat a little oil in the frying pan and place the Tofu in it, without the marinade that remains in the container. Do not pour the container with the marinade into the pan. The marinade that is baked on the Tofu.
Fry the Tofu until nicely browned. This Tofu is delicious with all kinds of vegetables, fried rice or noodles with peanut sauce.
Tofu Marinating Sambal
- 2 tbsp sambal
- 5 tbsp soy sauce manis
- 1 crushed garlic clove
- Olive oil, splash
Cut the Tofu into cubes of equal size . Mix all the spices and seasonings together in a bowl. Add a block of diced Tofu to the marinade. Stir the marinade and the Tofu together. Let this stand for about 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, you can take longer, scoop the cubes out of the marinade and fry them until nice and light brown. The spicy marinade can now be added to the Tofu and gently fry for 3 minutes. Enjoy your meal!
Tofu Marinating Italian
- 2 tsp Italian herbs
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 2 pinch Black pepper
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 block Tofu cut into cubes
Press the Tofu as described above. Stir together spices and other ingredients except the olive oil. Mix all ingredients well and add the Tofu.
Leave it covered for half an hour. Then fry the cubes of Tofu in olive oil in a frying pan until nicely browned.
Tofu Spices
- 1/2 to 1 tsp Black salt (egg flavour) or more
- 1 pinch Pepper
- 2 tsp Turmeric
- 1 block of tofu
This is a dish that is prepared quickly. You don’t have to squeeze the Tofu and the herbs are easy to add. Due to the spices, the Tofu resembles the English scrambled egg (crumbled egg) in taste and appearance.
Crumble the firm normal tofu. Put a little water in the frying pan and put the crumbled Tofu in it.
Fry the Tofu nice and warm. When the Tofu is nice and warm, the herbs can be added. Sprinkle a pinch of pepper through the Tofu and stir to combine. Now sprinkle Turmeric through it, so that it gets the color of egg yolk.
Then, little by little, add black salt to the Tofu until you like it. So it is always taste, with herbs, taste, with herbs, …. This egg dish is delicious on a sandwich or with the fried rice. It can be used with many dishes! Have fun and enjoy your meal.
Tofu Seasoning And Baking
- 4 tbsp soy sauce manis
- 1 tsp Ginger powder
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- Chili flakes or pepper as desired
In this recipe you do not need to press the tofu. Make cubes of the firm normal Tofu and fry them in the pan until golden brown. In this way you dry the Tofu, as it were, and it absorbs the herbs fine later.
Stir all herbs and seasonings together and decide how much pepper or chili flakes you want to add. One likes spicy the other doesn’t. Stir the herbs and spices into the Tofu while baking.
Add the chili flakes little by little if you’re not sure how much to use.
Delicious with rice with vegetables.
The quantities below are quantities for 1 block of firm Tofu. Feel free to add more spices if you like.
