How To Clean And Prepare Bimi?

Bimi

Bimi resembles small broccoli and has a taste similar to asparagus. Bimi is a small broccoli with long stems. The taste is softer and sweeter than that of broccoli. Bimi is called broccolini in English. In this blog we discuss ‘How to clean and prepare bimi?.

Clean and cut Bimi first. Stir-frying pieces of bimi takes 4 minutes. Stir-frying whole bimi takes 4 minutes, but first cooking for 2 minutes. Grill in the pan, 6 minutes in the oven 15 minutes. Cooking takes 4 -5 minutes. Bimi can be eaten raw in a salad.

Bimi is not a well-known vegetable in the Netherlands. In the supermarket, the bimi is available with special vegetables such as sugar snap peas and asparagus. Preparing bimi can be done in several ways. It all starts with cleaning bimi.

Bimi Cleaning

Cleaning bimi is actually very easy. The entire bimi is edible and does not need to be peeled. What is necessary is to cut off the end a bit. This is usually a dry piece.

Then rinse the bimi clean under the tap with cold water and your bimi is ready for further preparation.

Bimi wok

The wok is the most suitable pan for preparing bimi. For many vegetables this is cooking, but for bimi it is wok or stir-fry. The soft taste of bimi then comes into its own.

A wok with a thick bottom is nice for a good distribution of the heat. This wok pan on bol.com is highly recommended.

The preparation is as follows:

  1. Wash and cut the bimi as described above.
  2. Then cut the stem of the bimi into pieces and leave the florets whole.
  3. Place a wok on the heat source with some oil and heat it up.
  4. Then first the pieces of trunk go into the wok and we wok them for 3 -4 minutes.
  5. Then the florets go into the pan and we stir-fry them for 1 minute.
  6. Season with salt and pepper or a little bit of soy sauce.

Your dish can be served, enjoy your meal (of course you can add other vegetables, but this is entirely up to your own creativity).Bimi can stir fry with many other ingredients.

What you can also do is a different way of stir-frying, namely by stir-frying the entire bimi. For this we first have to cook the bimi briefly.

  1. Wash and cut the bimi as described above.
  2. Place a pan with a layer of water on the heat source and bring the water to a boil.
  3. When the water boils, the bimi goes into the pan for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Then drain the bimi in the colander and let it drain.
  5. Place the wok with oil on the heat source and heat the oil.
  6. Then the bimi goes into the wok and we stir-fry it for approx. 4 minutes.
  7. Pierce the bimi with a fork to make sure it is cooked. The fork should go in easily.

These were the two methods of stir-frying with bimi cut into pieces and with the whole bimi. Make your choice and good luck!

Bimi Grillen

The next way to prepare bimi is through grilling. Bimi is ideal for this. The bimi is not cut into pieces, we use the entire bimi. We grill with the grill pan and this is done as follows:

  1. Wash and cut the bimi as described above.
  2. Place a pan with a layer of water on the heat source and bring the water to a boil.
  3. When the water boils, the bimi goes into the pan for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Then drain the bimi in the colander and let it drain.
  5. Place the grill pan on the heat source and heat it up.
  6. Brush the bimi with olive oil, salt and pepper and place the bimi in the grill pan.
  7. Turn regularly and grill the bimi. Pierce the bimi with a fork to see if it is al dente. The fork should go in easily.

While grilling, you can grill on another bell pepper and add slivered almonds at the end for more flavor.

Bimi From The Oven

Grilling bimi can of course also be done under the grill in the oven. This goes like this:

  1. Wash and cut the bimi as described above.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  3. Brush the bimi with oil with a brush and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the bimi on the baking tray, place the bimi next to each other.
  5. Then the baking sheet goes into the oven for 15 minutes.

Your bimi is now ready and tastes great with fried sesame seeds and potatoes.

Bimi Cooking

Finally, we cook bimi. This is easy to do and your bimi will be on the table in no time. What do you have to do for this?

  1. Place a pan with a layer of water on the heat source and bring the water to a boil.
  2. Then the bimi goes into the pan. Make sure there is not too much water in the pan. The bimi does not have to be completely under the water.
  3. Add a pinch of salt and put the lid on the pan.
  4. Boil the bimi for 4 minutes and then drain it in the colander.

Bimi Salad

Bimi also comes into its own in a salad. The taste resembles asparagus but is slightly peppery and therefore has a nice bite.

The bimi does not need to be cooked, but it does need to be cleaned thoroughly. This is described at the very top of this blog.

Are they thick pieces of trunk or do you think the trunk is a bit too hard? Then boil the pieces of stem for about 1 minute and then drain them in your colander. Then rinse with cold water. Now the pieces of trunk are slightly softer and tastier to eat.

This is not necessary for the florets, they must be rinsed well under the tap. Now you can make a delicious salad, choose what you want to add to it. Enjoy your meal!
