Most often, we throw the fruits we bought in winter on the shelf in the refrigerator. Then we wonder why they spoiled so quickly or lost their rich fruity aroma and became tasteless. The thing is that not all fruits can be stored in the cold. And if possible, then you need to do it wisely. We tell you which fruits can be stored in the refrigerator, and which ones can only be stored at room temperature.
Which fruits can be stored in the refrigerator
Grape
A native of the slopes of the southern mountains, surprisingly, it likes cold storage. And not even in the fruit compartment, grapes require more serious frost – about 1-2 degrees above zero. It is best to place the grapes in a food container or in a bag with slots; a little ventilation will relieve them of condensation and extend their shelf life.
At room temperature, grapes darken very quickly, lose their fresh appearance and rot. Therefore, you need to take out of the refrigerator only the portion that you intend to eat within a couple of hours.
Persimmon
Persimmons are great in the refrigerator. Moreover, if you realize that persimmon is slightly astringent, then it is better to keep it in the freezer for an hour or two, and then eat it – the astringent taste will go away. If the persimmon is simply sweet and soft, then it should be placed in the compartment for vegetables and fruits, without a plastic bag, with the tails down. It is also worth wrapping each fruit well in paper, so they will spoil less. But keep in mind that ripe persimmons won’t last long in the refrigerator, a couple of days and the fruit will begin to blur.
Citrus
They need a temperature around 5-6 degrees Celsius. Therefore, a box for storing vegetables is suitable. It is best not to place tangerines and oranges next to other fruits and vegetables. Especially avoid proximity to apples and bananas. These fruits emit ethylene and can cause other fruits nearby to spoil quickly.
Tangerines, oranges and lemons cannot be stored in plastic bags, as they begin to mold and rot in them. Instead, you can transfer the fruit to parchment sheets.
Apples
Stores well in the refrigerator. They just need a lower temperature, just like grapes. Therefore, it is best to place it on the top shelf, away from the vegetable drawers.
Another important point: do not store apples next to other fruits. Apples actively emit ethylene and will cause other products near them to become overripe.
Apples can be stored in a plastic bag, but it is better to make several punctures in it with a toothpick to prevent condensation from collecting.
Mango
Mangoes can be refrigerated for 10-14 days and remain fresh. A storage area for vegetables and fruits is suitable for him. It is good to pack mangoes in paper bags.
If you come across an unripe mango, it is better to remove it from the refrigerator a couple of days before eating and leave it to ripen at room temperature. Everything is in the same paper bag. Mangoes will not ripen in the refrigerator, but in a warm place – please.
What fruit should not be refrigerated?
Watermelon and melon
Whole, uncut melons, watermelon and melon should be stored at room temperature. It is important that there are no sudden changes: there are no heat sources nearby, there are no flows of cold air, or drafts. It is better not to put whole fruits in the refrigerator, as this will spoil the taste and aroma.
But if you cut a watermelon or melon, you will have to store them in the refrigerator. And not for long. It is advisable to eat cut fruits within 24 hours.
A pineapple
For pineapple, storing in the refrigerator is too humid an environment. There is a possibility that the exotic fruit will quickly begin to rot. Therefore, it is better to leave it at room temperature, preferably 18-20 degrees. When storing, it is better to wrap the pineapple in paper. A ripe pineapple will not last long – a few days, and it will need to be eaten.
Avocado
The tender green fruit with a large seed is also a fruit. And he loves warmth. It is best to store avocados wrapped in paper and at room temperature. While it is stored, the fruit will ripen, as it is often sold slightly hard.
Strawberry
It loses its flavor in the refrigerator. Therefore, it is better to store it at room temperature, unwashed and unpeeled from green stalks. Ripe strawberries cannot be stored for a long time, a couple of days and they begin to deteriorate.
Bananas
They turn black faster in the refrigerator. So it is better to store bananas at room temperature, wrapping their tails with parchment or paper. It’s also a good idea to separate a bunch of bananas into individual fruits.
