Sodium bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda , sodium hydrogen carbonate , sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda ). Its chemical formula is ( NaHCO3 ) and its E number as a food additive code is E500 . It is a white crystalline solid compound soluble in water, with a slight alkaline flavor similar to that of sodium carbonate, with the formula NaHCO3. It can be found as a mineral in nature or produced artificially.

Obtaining
Through the Solvay process. Although it is used to obtain Na 2 CO 3 , it is possible to obtain sodium bicarbonate in one of the intermediate reactions. The process consists of the following reaction:
Na + + Cl – + NH 3 + H 2 O + CO 2 → NaHCO 3 (s) + NH 4 + + Cl –
In which sodium bicarbonate precipitates.
Reaction
In the presence of a moderately strong acid it decomposes into carbon dioxide and water. The reaction is the following:
- NaHCO 3+ HCl → NaCl + H 2 O + CO 2 (gas)
- NaHCO 3+ CH 3 COOH → CH 3 COONa + H 2 O + CO 2 (gas)
As it has the ability to release carbon dioxide, it is used together with acidic compounds as a leavening additive in baking and in the production of soft drinks. Some baking yeasts contain “sodium bicarbonate.” It was formerly used as a source of carbon dioxide for the soda “Coca Cola”.
Applications of baking soda
- Baking soda is primarily used in baking, where it reacts with other components to release CO 2, which helps the dough rise, giving it flavor and volume. Acidic compounds that induce this reaction include potassium bitartrate (also known as cream of tartar ), lemon juice, yogurt, acetic acid .
Fire extinguisher
- In detergents, such as in swimming pools, “baking soda” acts as a barrier maintaining an adequate pH for optimal water balance and cleaning effectiveness. Soda blasting “sodium bicarbonate” provides very easy, environmentally friendly and effective removal and cleaning of paint and graffiti compared to alternative products. In fire extinguishers, when “baking soda” is sprayed on a flame, carbon dioxide is released which transforms into a blanket that prevents oxygen from fueling the fire.
- As an alkalizing agent that acts in combination with the saliva in the coking, so that it softens and the extraction of the metabolites of the coca leaf occurs, thus making the coking a pleasant and long-lasting process in contrast to if it were not used. baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate is to coca what sugar is to coffee, so in the mountains of Peru , Bolivia and northern Argentina (where coking is practiced) bicarbonate consumption is high.
Industrial products
- Exhaust gas desulfurization.
- Drilling applications.
- Cleaning agent.
- Water treatment.
- Barrier in swimming pools.
medical uses
- Gargling with baking soda prevents the flu and throat infections
- A bath with baking soda eliminates vaginal yeast infections.
- Take with water as an antacid to avoid heartburn and heartburn. *Mix with vinegar and put on bee stings or other insects .
- Make a paste with water for ant or spider bites .
- Put on the skin exposed to a poisonous wound to extract the poison and dry the wound.
- Helps heal sores.
Other uses
- Put it in the garden to check the acidity of the soil (if it bubbles, it is too acidic).
- Mix with glue to make a crack filler.
- Spread between the wet pages of the books and then dry them in the sun.
- Mixed with boiling water it helps unclog pipes.
- It is used in fabric softener.
- To kill fleas , mix with salt and spread all over the carpets.
- Place in the refrigerator to avoid bad smell caused by humidity.
- Use instead of talcum powder to avoid bad foot odor.
- Mix baking soda with crazy glue to fill cracks in wood and porcelain.
- Neutralizes battery acid quickly if it is spilled.
- It is also used as a teeth whitener as it polishes the surface of the enamel
