To store hard-boiled eggs optimally, there are different solutions to allow you to consume them without taking any risks.

In fact, hard-boiled eggs, as delicious as they are easy to prepare, are recognized as a great classic in everyday cooking. Whether they are eaten as is, cooked mimosa style with homemade mayonnaise or cut into quarters to garnish a whole salad, this technique for cooking eggs lends itself to an infinite number of recipes.

However, a question remains when we happen to cook more hard-boiled eggs than necessary: ​​how and for how long can they be stored optimally?

Here is an overview of the various methods available to us!

Storing hard-boiled eggs in the fridge

To store hard-boiled eggs, the most classic and also the simplest technique is undoubtedly the refrigerator.

Once the eggs are cooked in a pot of boiling water (between 9 and 12 minutes depending on their size), they can easily be stored in the refrigerator.

With their shell

This technique is the most suitable and the safest, because the shell protects the egg from bacteria and external odours.

To do this, let the eggs cool to room temperature and then place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to 5 days.

Other conservation tips: avoid running them under water after cooking. Simply let them cool to room temperature, no more than 2 hours out of the fridge. Indeed, eggshells are porous and running under tap water could risk transmitting bacteria to them.

Without their shell

If you want to store hard-boiled eggs, without their shells, it is important to keep them moist, as they will tend to dry out once peeled.

If you wish, you can refresh them in a bowl of cold water to facilitate the removal of the shell (but this is not mandatory).

Once cooled to room temperature (without exceeding 2 hours outside the refrigerator), hard-boiled, peeled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator in the following two ways, for up to 2 days :

  • In an airtight container, covered with absorbent paper or a damp cloth that you will change every day;
  • In a container filled with water and not closed, which you will also change the water every day.

Storage of hard-boiled eggs marinated in vinegar

If this technique may seem to come from another century, it really deserves to be known. Indeed, it has several advantages:

  • longer storage than the previous method;
  • flavoring;
  • availability of boiled eggs at any time in your refrigerator.

As for the recipe, nothing could be simpler. Boil hard-boiled eggs, peel them and place them in a large jar that has been cleaned and sterilized beforehand. Heat in a saucepan the same volume of water as vinegar (white, cider, wine, white balsamic, etc.), salt, sugar and the spices of your choice.

Once boiling, pour the mixture into the jar to completely cover the eggs. Once the jar has cooled to room temperature, store it in the refrigerator and wait 24 hours before consuming the marinated hard-boiled eggs. They will keep for up to 15 days.

Cabbage, red onions, turmeric… How about having fun flavoring your hard-boiled eggs by adding different vegetables and spices to your liquid vinegar-based preparation? Bonus: depending on the vegetables chosen, your liquid and the outside of your hard-boiled eggs will be nicely colored!

Additional tips for optimal storage of hard-boiled eggs

  • Would you like to taste boiled eggs during a picnic? Transport them in their shells in an airtight container stored in a cooler with ice packs. All this over a period of ideally less than 2 hours.
  • Count the days and refer to the smell of hard-boiled eggs to find out if they’re still good. If in doubt, don’t take the risk and don’t eat them.
  • Don’t be fooled by the color of cooked egg yolks, which can sometimes approach green or gray. Their color is a simple marker of a very long cooking.
