How to steam string beans?

The string bean is a vegetable with which much more can be done than just cooking or steaming. You can also stir fry it, for example. In addition, they taste even better when they are seasoned. You can read all about this in our blog ‘ How to Season String Beans? Multiple ways ‘.

Although cooking is most common in Dutch cuisine, steaming is still our preference. The taste, color and vitamins in the vegetables are thus preserved.

How Long To Steam String Beans

The steaming time of string beans depends a bit on the size of the sliced string beans. Small sliced string beans have a steaming time of about 10 minutes. The larger pieces of string beans have a steaming time of 12 – 15 minutes.

When you think they are done, pierce them with a fork and check if they are al dente. Even better is to taste a piece of string bean. If it is still too hard, let it steam for a few more minutes.

French beans Steaming

Before steaming the string beans, the beans are first cut and cleaned. Cut off both ends of the string beans. Then cut the string beans into even sized pieces with a sharp, large knife.

Place the pan on the heat source and fill the pan with a layer of water. Place the string beans in the basket while you bring the water to a boil. When the water boils, put the lid on the pan and turn the setting to medium-high. The water must continue to boil.

Do not add salt. Salt makes the skin of the string beans hard. Afterwards you can season the string beans with herbs. (see link above).

You put the lid on the pan otherwise the water will evaporate very quickly and you will not have enough water to steam.

Now steam the string beans according to the above steaming time.

Carefully remove the string beans from the pan. Use oven gloves as steam is very hot. Serve the string beans now.

Steamer or steamer basket

We can steam the vegetables in a steamer, wicker steamer or stainless steel steamer.

A steamer with two layers has the advantage that you can steam several vegetables at the same time. This pan is highly recommended. It has good steam holes and is easy to clean.

In addition, there are cheaper alternatives such as the stainless steel steam basket. This basket adjusts itself to the size of the pan and is easy to clean.

There are also baskets made of wicker. The advantage is that these also have multiple layers. They are just a little more difficult to clean.
