Can you freeze turmeric?

Can you freeze turmeric

Can you freeze turmeric? Yes, you can freeze turmeric for about 3 months. You can freeze your turmeric whole, cut into chunks, or grated.

We have described each of these two methods in detail below. In most cases, you won’t even need to thaw your turmeric to use it!

How to freeze turmeric?

The simplest approach is to freeze a rhizome whole, or cut into pieces, in an airtight container or re sealable freezer bag. Here’s how:

  1. Start by peeling your turmeric rhizome. The easiest way to do this is to use a teaspoon.
  2. Once peeled, cut the rhizome into pieces if desired. Think about how much turmeric you usually use in your recipes and cut pieces accordingly.
  3. Wrap the rhizome or pieces in plastic wrap and put them in a resealable freezer bag or airtight container.
  4. Seal the freezer bag or container tightly, pushing out as much air as possible. Label the freezer bag or container with the date and contents, then put the turmeric in the freezer.
  5. As soon as you need to add turmeric to a dish, you can grate it as it is without thawing it first.

How to freeze grated turmeric?

If you want to have a stock of grated turmeric ready to use in your freezer, you can freeze it as ice cubes. Here’s how:

  1. Start by peeling your turmeric rhizome. The easiest way to do this is to use a teaspoon.
  2. Once peeled, grate the rhizome with a cheese grater.
  3. Next, get an ice cube tray. Put about a tablespoon (or three teaspoons, it’s the same amount) of grated turmeric in each compartment of the ice cube tray, fill with water to cover the turmeric and put everything in the freezer.
  4. Once the ice cubes are frozen, take the ice cube tray out of the freezer and transfer the turmeric ice cubes to a freezer bag. Seal the freezer bag tightly, pushing out as much air as possible.
  5. Label the freezer bag with the date and contents, then return the turmeric ice cubes to the freezer.
  6. Whenever you want to add a touch of turmeric to a curry, stew or soup, take an ice cube out of the freezer and stir it straight into your dish.

What is the shelf life of turmeric in the freezer?

Turmeric will keep for about 3 months in the freezer. After this time, it will still be safe to eat but its flavor, texture or appearance may begin to deteriorate noticeably.

How to thaw turmeric?

In many cases, you don’t need to thaw your turmeric! If you froze a whole rhizome or large chunks, just take the turmeric out of the freezer and grate it straight into your dish.

If you need to use large chunks, you’ll need to let the rhizome thaw out so you can cut it more easily (hence the point of cutting it into chunks before freezing). The best approach is to put the turmeric in the fridge to thaw gently.
