How to store spring onion?
The spring onion is a very young onion that is harvested early. When the onion is not yet ripe, the onions are harvested. The taste of spring onion is mainly in the young green leaves. The green stems can be used in, for example, soup, salad or on the sandwich. But how can you store spring onion or freeze it?
Keep the spring onion in a cool and dark place. If you don’t have these, the vegetable drawers are the best option. It will then remain good for 1 week. Or keep the spring onion in a glass with water; The spring onion then grows. You can store sliced spring onions in the freezer for 6 months.
How to store spring onion
You can keep spring onion very well. If you put it in the right place, the foliage will remain nice and crispy. Store the spring onion in a cool, dry place at a temperature of 12-15 degrees.
This place used to be the cool dark basement closet but most modern houses no longer have a basement closet. If you do, put the spring onion there. If you don’t have a cool dark place, keep them in the fridge.
Store Spring onion in the refrigerator
Since most modern homes don’t have a cool place, the best place to store is the vegetable drawers in your refrigerator. Here the spring onion can store very well. It will keep for at least a week in the refrigerator.
If you have sliced spring onion, keep it in the fridge. Put the spring onion in a sealable bag or container and place it in the refrigerator. Now you can keep the spring onion for about 4 days. If you are going to use it, taste whether it still has a nice taste and whether it is still crunchy.
Store Spring Onion In Water
What is fun to do is keep the spring onion in a glass of water. It looks great in the kitchen and you always have fresh crunchy spring onion.
The spring onion is harvested early and sometimes there are still carrots on it. We are going to use these carrots again. Put a layer of water in a nice and decorative glass. Now place the spring onion in the glass and make sure that the bottom of the spring onion is in the water. This way you can keep the spring onion for a long time, because it will grow again.
If you need the spring onion, just cut off the green leaves and put the white onion back in the glass. The spring onion will now produce new foliage and start to grow. This way you can use the bunch of spring onion for a long time.
Freeze spring onion
Finally freezing the spring onion. Yes, that is also possible. It is not recommended and I would not know why you would want to do this, but it is possible.
Do not freeze the whole spring onion, but cut the foliage of the spring onion into rings. Put these rings in a freezer bag or container and place them in the freezer. You can now keep it for 12 months. You can now put the white of the spring onion in a glass of water. You will then automatically get new foliage.
If you want to use the spring onion again in, for example, a warm dish, do not let the spring onion thaw, but put it directly in the pan or wok from the freezer. Bake it for no more than 5 minutes.
If you use it on a salad or sandwich, then of course let it thaw. Remove the spring onion from the freezer and let it thaw for 10 minutes.
After defrosting you will see that the crunchy texture has disappeared. However, the spring onion has retained all its flavor.
Not good anymore
The spring onion is no longer good if the leaves are shriveled and dried out. Sliced spring onions from the fridge can become snotty, so always look, smell and taste before using.
