How to Store Pineapple? Several ways
Pineapple is a delicious sweet fruit with a lot of fiber that originates from South America. In this blog, we will discuss how to store pineapple for a long time. Pineapples can be bought at the supermarket or from the vegetable farmer in various varieties such as whole fresh pineapple, cleaned sliced pineapple in a plastic bag, and canned pineapple. But how can you store pineapple?
How to store pineapple? This can be done in the following ways:
- You can keep a fresh pineapple outside the refrigerator at a low temperature for about 5 days.
- Freshly sliced pineapple can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 days in a closed container.
- Cleaned, sliced pineapple can be kept in the freezer for 12 months.
- Pineapple in an opened tin can be kept in the refrigerator for 2 days.
Pineapple is very healthy, 1 slice of pineapple has enough vitamin C for the entire day. You want to enjoy it for a long time. You can read below how to store pineapple.
Keep Fresh Pineapple Outside Of the Refrigerator
Fresh pineapple is best kept outside the refrigerator. The pineapple can then be kept for 3 days. This is a relatively short time, this is because the pineapple is picked ripe.
It is best to keep the pineapple upside down. Due to the long transport, a lot of juice has settled to the bottom of the pineapple. By turning the pineapple over, some of the juice will sink back. You can do this by removing the leaves and placing the pineapple upside down on the fruit bowl.
Do not store sliced pineapple and pineapple in an open tin outside the refrigerator.
Store pineapple in the refrigerator
Freshly sliced pineapple should be kept in the refrigerator. The best thing to do is to clean the pineapple in its entirety and cut it into pieces or slices. Place the pineapple pieces in a sealed container or plastic bag and place in the refrigerator. You can keep the pineapple for 4-5 days.
The pineapple tastes best at room temperature, so remove the pineapple from the refrigerator when you want to eat it.
It is better not to keep an uncut fresh pineapple in the refrigerator. It is an exotic fruit and these cannot withstand the cold (sounds logical, right!). The low temperature of the refrigerator can cause spoilage, so you have to throw the pineapple away.
Pineapple from an opened can must be kept in the refrigerator. The best method is to toss the pineapple in a plastic container with a lid. Make sure that the juice also enters the container. Close the lid and place it in the refrigerator. You can keep the pineapple for another 5 days.
Store Pineapple in the Freezer
You can freeze pineapple very well. It takes some preparation, but the pieces of pineapple are perfect for a pineapple smoothie, for example.
Clean the pineapple and slice it. Place the slices on baking paper and make sure that the pieces do not touch each other. Place the baking paper with the pineapple in the freezer. The pineapple pieces are frozen after about 3 hours. You can now take them out of the freezer and put them in a closed container or plastic bag and put them back in the freezer. You can keep the pineapple for at least 12 months.
If you want to make a smoothie, you can always take 1 piece from the freezer.
Do you just want to eat the pineapple? Then put the pineapple in a covered dish in the refrigerator to thaw.
Keep Pineapple by Drying
You can also keep a pineapple by drying the pineapple. It takes some work, but it is going very well. When the pineapple has dried, you can keep the pineapple in a closed container for at least 12 months.
You can use your own oven for the drying process. If you have the time and space, you can also dry the pineapple in the sun. Finally, you can also dry it by using a special fruit dryer. However, the oven is the most commonly used device for drying pineapple.
Pineapple Drying in the Oven
Preheat the oven to a temperature of 100 degrees. Place the sliced pineapple slices on the oven rack. Do not make the slices too thick, because then it takes longer to dry and this also costs more energy. Close the oven but make sure to leave the lid or door slightly open for ventilation. Depending on the thickness of the slices, the drying time is about 5 hours. Take a look in the oven regularly to see if it all dries to your liking.
After 5 hours, check if there is still moisture in the pineapple by cutting a slice in half. If no moisture comes out, it is ready. If moisture does come out, wait a while.
Pineapple Drying With a Fruit Dryer
The best method for drying fruit is with a fruit dryer. With this dryer, the taste and nutrients are best preserved. The fruit dries at a low constant temperature. This makes it a long process.
For further instruction, please refer to the fruit dryer directions for use, as each dryer has its own characteristics and dries differently.
Pineapple Air Drying
To air dry pineapple you need several days from above 30-35 degrees. These are becoming more common, but still!
It’s a bit like drying in the oven. Place the slices on a rack to rest in the sun. Just make sure that birds and other animals cannot peck the discs. The pineapple slices are dry after about 4 days.
Is The Fresh Pineapple Ripe?
Before you store a fresh pineapple, it is wise to first check whether you are buying a ripe pineapple or whether you are buying an overripe pineapple.
You can easily check a ripe pineapple. Pull a leaf from the crown of the pineapple. Let it go with a little tug, then the pineapple is ripe. If the leaf remains stuck, the pineapple is not yet ripe. If the leaves are very loose, the pineapple is overripe.
Smelling is also one way. If the pineapple gives off a sweet scent, the pineapple is ripe. No smell? The pineapple is not ripe. Does the smell have some kind of alcohol smell? Then the pineapple is overripe.
It is best and tastiest to eat a fresh ripe pineapple right away and not keep it. Enjoy your meal.
