Dates can be stored in different ways. It depends a bit on in what quality the dates are or have been. Are the dates completely fresh, or have they already been frozen during transport or are the dates candied or dried? For example, more and more questions arise that need to be answered in order to know whether and how you should or can store dates. Hence this article: Preserving dates – 3 ways and 1 definitely not!

How to Store Dates

Do not freeze-dried dates for food safety reasons. Dried dates can be stored for several months if you store them in a dark, dry and cool place in the refrigerator or kitchen cupboard. Fresh dates can be stored in the fridge or frozen for a few days.

There are a number of things you should pay attention to before storing dates. You will read that in the following chapters. This way you ensure that the dates stay good for the longest. If you are not sure whether the dates are still good, the advice is to smell, taste and look. This way you know for sure that the dates are still good.

Stick a sticker with the date you opened the package. Then you know when your dates are still edible or when you should smell, taste and look. Dark dates are often spoiled.

Medjoul Dates Storage

Fresh Medjoul dates are tropical fruits. A really fresh date is full of moisture and the skin is nice and tight. These dates are almost not available in the Netherlands. You have to store these fruits with care, otherwise the shelf life will deteriorate rapidly. You can store really fresh Medjoul dates in the refrigerator for a few days after purchase and in the freezer for 6 months in a sealed container.

Do you want to store dried Medjoul dates? These dried dates have a shelf life of at least 8 months if you store them in a dry, dark and cool place in a closed container. This can be kept in the fridge but is not necessary. Always close the package tightly, as dates tend to absorb different flavors from other strong-smelling products in the refrigerator.

Dates can create a sugar layer after being in the fridge for a long time and become a bit harder, but they are still edible. If you are not sure if they are good, you can use ‘smell, look and taste’ to determine if they are good. The best way out there!

Dried Medjoul dates should not be frozen. Often they have already been frozen and when you freeze them again and let them thaw, many bacteria develop in the dates that can make you very sick.

Tip: put a sticker on the box with the best before date.

Store Dried Dates

Many dates that go on sale are dried before they travel to their destination. Drying often takes place on the tree itself. This allows the date to be stored longer. So its shelf life is longer.

You can store dried dates for about 8 months after purchase. There are, however, a number of rules that you must observe, namely: The dates must be stored in a dry, cool and dark place. So be careful when there are dried dates in the fridge and ‘something’ starts to leak. When the date comes into contact with moisture, the date is no longer dried, because it absorbs the moisture and can start to mould. It is therefore important to consume the date immediately or throw it away. You can prevent this by placing the dates in a well-closable container with a sticker showing the date of purchase.

You can also simply put these dried dates in a dark, dry and cool kitchen cupboard.

How Long To Keep Dates

  • Dates can be kept fresh (really fresh, without having been frozen) in the refrigerator for 10 days at most. These are (almost) not available here.
  • Dates, really fresh, as described above, can be stored in the freezer for 6 months.
  • Dried dates can be kept in the fridge for about 8 months in a sealed container, but they will harden and form a sugar layer. They are still edible.
  • Dried dates can also be stored for 8 months in a kitchen cupboard, dry, cool and dark and in a closed container. They will then become a bit harder and can get a sugar coating.
  • Dates, dried, can  not be kept  in the freezer. Most dates have already been frozen and cannot go back into the freezer. This has to do with the bacteria growth in the dates during the thawing process. Then it will be twice as much after a second defrosting. You can get very sick from it.

Dates Store Fridge

Dates that have been really fresh and never frozen can be kept in the fridge for about 10 days. These are (almost) not for sale in the Netherlands. They are delicate fruits. Smell, taste and look at the fruit if you are not sure if they are still good.

Dates that are stored dried in the refrigerator can keep for about 8 months. Make sure that they do not come into contact with moisture (for example with leaks from products), which shortens the shelf life.

Dates Freezing

Dates are washed after picking and then frozen when they are transported. So when they are transported to Europe, for example. Frozen dates can then be stored in the freezer for 6 months. When the dates are placed in the store, they are thawed again.

Once thawed, it is not wise to refreeze the dates at home. This has to do with bacterial growth in the dates that can make you sick. Store the dates in a dry, cool and dark place. That way you will benefit the most from it.

Store stuffed dates

Stuffed dates can be stored in the fridge for 2 days in a sealed container. If you do not close it properly, the date will absorb flavors from, for example, onions. That does not benefit the taste of the date.
