How Long To Cook Potatoes?

When you cook potatoes, you naturally want to know how long you have to cook the potatoes. This is different for fresh potatoes and small potatoes from the refrigerated shelf. They are usually pre-cooked from the refrigerated shelf.

  • Fresh potatoes (the real ones) have a cooking time of 15 minutes.
  • Fresh Potatoes, pre-cooked, in 5 minutes.
  • You can cook the potatoes from the cool shelf in 8 – 10 minutes.
  • Cook fresh potatoes in the microwave for 10 minutes.
  • Boil potatoes from the refrigerator for 7 minutes.

To make sure they are cooked, you can pierce the potatoes with a fork to check if they are cooked.

Cooking fresh potatoes

Fresh potatoes are oval small potatoes. They are harvested early before they are ripe. This gives them a refined taste. The skin is usually yellow, but there are also small potatoes with a red skin.

You can peel or grate the potatoes before cooking them, but this is not common. Fresh potatoes are harvested early and have a very thin skin. This peel is edible and extremely nutritious. Many nutrients are in the skin or just below the skin.

In addition, it is also nice to serve the cooked potatoes with their skins and all, especially if you make them spicy with, for example, parsley or Provencal herbs.

Cooking new potatoes with peel

The fresh potatoes are cooked with the skin and all. If you cook them without the skin, the cooking time is the same.

  1. First clean the potatoes under the tap. Remove dirt and soil from it .
  2. Place a pan with plenty of water on the heat source and bring the water to a boil. If you’re cooking them, skin and all, don’t add salt. If you cook them without skin, you can add salt.
  3. When the water boils, the potatoes go into the pan.
  4. Now cook the potatoes for about 15 minutes. The cooking time depends on the size of the potatoes.
  5. Drain the potatoes in a colander.

You can serve them right now. You can also drizzle them with a little olive oil and sprinkle with green herbs. It looks nice and is very tasty.

If you cook them with the skin on, don’t forget the salt.

Cooking precooked potatoes

The pre-cooked potatoes have already been cooked for a short time and are in the refrigerator. They are pre-cooked in the factory so that they have a longer shelf life. However, they still need to be cooked before you can eat them.

  1. Place a pan of water on the heat source, add salt if necessary and bring the water to a boil.
  2. When the water boils, the pre-cooked potatoes go into the pan.
  3. Now cook the potatoes for 8 – 10 minutes. The cooking time depends on the size of the potatoes.
  4. Drain the potatoes in a colander.

Serve the baby potatoes or sprinkle them with green herbs such as parsley and a little freshly ground pepper. Enjoy your meal!

Pre-cooking potatoes

You may want to use the fresh potatoes in your wok dish. Then it is useful to pre-cook your potatoes. Cooking is described above in the chapter ‘Cooking potatoes with skin’, however the cooking time is now about 5 minutes.

Then drain them and use them in your wok dish or let them cool for later use.

Baking potatoes without cooking

Small potatoes are often fried. They are then tasty and have a crispy outside. You can also stir-fry them with lots of other ingredients like mushrooms and onion.

The potatoes from the cool shelf are pre-cooked, you don’t have to cook them anymore and can be baked right away.

This is different with fresh potatoes. You can cook these, but you don’t have to. If you bake them without boiling, cut the large potatoes into quarters, so that all the potatoes are the same size.

Take a frying pan with a lid, heat the oil in it and put the potatoes in the pan. Fry for 5 minutes on high heat and stir the potatoes through the pan. Then put the lid half on the pan and lower the heat source. Turn the potatoes every now and then and bake for 10 – 15 minutes. Total baking time is about 15 -20 minutes. If they are not cooked yet, bake them a little longer on a higher heat. Keep stirring to avoid burning.

Pierce the potatoes with a fork to check if they are cooked. The fork should go in easily.

Cooking and baking potatoes

It is useful to cook fresh potatoes first. The cooking time in this case is 5 minutes. For cooking potatoes, refer to the chapter ‘Cooking Bantams With Peel’.

When you have cooked the potatoes briefly, you can remove the skin. This is not necessary. You can now bake them whole or you can cut them in half and then bake them. Fry the potatoes in oil and a frying pan. The baking time is about 10 – 15 minutes. If they are not yet cooked, fry them a little longer on high heat.

Finish your dish by seasoning it nicely. We wrote a blog about this ‘ How to Season Potatoes? Many options ‘ tells you all about it.

Cooking new potatoes in the microwave

You can cook the potatoes from the cooling shelf in the microwave. Poke a few holes in the bag with a fork and set the setting of your microwave to 800 watts and the timer to 6 minutes. You now have very quickly boiled potatoes.

To make sure they are cooked, pierce the potatoes with a fork, it should go in easily.

You can also cook fresh potatoes in the microwave. First, make the potatoes the same size. Cut the large potatoes into smaller pieces. Then place the potatoes in a microwave bowl and add 4 tablespoons of water. Put the lid on the container. Set the power to 800 watts and the timer initially to 8 minutes.

Check after 8 minutes whether they are cooked by pricking the potatoes with a fork. If they are not yet cooked, put them in the microwave for another 2 minutes.
