Tofu Crispy Baking

When we bake tofu we usually want to have a crispy crust; this is tofu crispy baking. The outside is crispy and the inside remains nice and soft. To achieve this we need to make preparations before we can start baking. First we will dry the tofu.

Tofu Pressing

You usually buy tofu in a block in a plastic container with water. The tofu has also sucked itself full of water. Now it is nice if we can squeeze a lot of this water out of the tofu. This is conducive to crispy frying of the tofu.

You can use a tofu press for this, but you can also use a cutting board, kitchen paper, a heavy object such as a book or a kilo of flour.

Let the tofu stand for 15-30 minutes and a lot of moisture will be squeezed out of the tofu. Then we can cut it.

Tofu Cutting

Then we cut the tofu. That can be done in many ways. In large chunks, slices, strips or cubes for stir-frying. You probably know what you want to prepare, so you already know how big you want your tofu. Now cut the tofu into pieces.

Baking

Now that we have made the preparations, we can start baking the tofu. You have two options for this. Bake in the oven or bake in the pan. Either way will give your tofu the desired crispy crust.

You can also choose to marinate the tofu. This is not necessary, but it does happen often! You can also sprinkle the tofu with just salt and pepper and then bake.

Tofu Marinating And Baking

Before you bake the tofu, you can choose to marinate your tofu. Tofu has a neutral taste in itself and is able to absorb flavors. If you want, you can make a marinade and put the tofu in it. Let the marinade sit for at least 15 minutes. If you have the option, make the marinated tofu a day in advance. This will allow the flavors to soak into the tofu.

Never use an oil as the base of your marinade. Water and oil repel each other and tofu contains a lot of water.

When you use a little sugar in the marinade or, for example, agave syrup, this will contribute to the crispy crust. The sugars will caramelize during baking and form a nice crust.

Below is an example of a marinade. If you want to know more about marinating tofu, read our blog ‘ How to Marinate Tofu? Multiple options ‘.

The marinade recipe:

  • 6 tbsp soy sauce Manis
  • 1-2 tsp agave syrup or sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 clove Garlic, crushed
  • Piece of ginger, 1.5 cm or more as desired
  • Half red pepper
  • tofu

Mix the soy sauce, agave syrup, lemon juice, crushed garlic cloves, grated ginger and finely chopped red pepper (without seeds) in a bowl.

Place the (sliced) tofu in a bowl and pour the marinade over it. Now let it stand for at least 15 minutes.

When you pass the tofu through flour or cornflour after marinating, you really get a crispy short.

Baking Tofu In Oven

All preparations have been made, then we will preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Remove the baking tray from the oven and place a sheet of baking paper on it. Now divide the tofu over the baking paper and slide the baking tray in the middle of the oven. Now let it bake for 15 minutes. Then turn the tofu so that the other side is brown and crispy as well. Then let it bake for 10 minutes.

You can pierce it with a fork to make sure it’s good. You automatically feel if it is right. Of course you can also taste a piece.

Your tofu is ready and can be eaten or further processed in your dish.

Baking Tofu In Pan

We will fry the prepared tofu in the pan.

Place the frying pan or wok on the heat source and add a few spoons of oil. Heat the oil well. Then add the tofu to the pan, making sure the tofu is on the bottom of the pan. So don’t fry too much tofu at once.

When one side is golden brown, turn the tofu strips or slices over and fry the other side. Baking time is about 4-5 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the tofu.

If you fry cubes of tofu, put the tofu in the pan and turn it over more quickly. So don’t let one side brown first, but keep the tofu moving in the pan, as it were. When they are golden brown, the tofu is ready. I advise you to taste it to see if it has a nice texture and taste. The baking time is about 8 – 10 minutes.

You can now serve your tofu. Enjoy your meal.

Baking Silk Tofu

This tofu, silken tofu is normally not used for baking. It is mainly used to make desserts. This tofu is very soft and will fall apart during baking.

Keep this tofu or but delicious chocolate mousse with it and use other tofu for baking.
