How to Bake Potatoes?
How to Bake Potatoes? Almost cooked through in 10 minutes. Cut through and brown in the pan for 15 minutes. You can fry precooked potatoes from the supermarket in a pan in 10 minutes. Bake the potatoes from the oven in 25 minutes.
This is just a selection of the many ways of baking potatoes. It can be done in the oven, with herbs, with skin and without skin. Baking frozen potatoes yourself are discussed and much more. Have fun baking potatoes in all kinds of ways.
Baking potatoes without cooking
You don’t have to cook the potatoes that you buy pre-fried at the neighborhood super in advance, that’s already done for you. You can fry these potatoes in a frying pan with some vegetable butter (I think it bakes best), but it can also be sunflower oil, for example. These potatoes are cooked and nicely browned in about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally or roll back and forth so that they brown evenly.
With real potatoes, some preparations are needed if you don’t want to have to bake ‘hours’ to get them cooked. So cook anyway (in the skin) and then let it cool and cut into cubes or slices. These wedges are browned in about 10 minutes. You can also cook them (i.e. precook) in the microwave with 4 tablespoons of water, in a microwaveable dish with a lid. You can leave the peel on. Let the potatoes cook in the microwave, let it cool and then cut into pieces again or in half and bake.
The fact remains: if you want to bake real baby potatoes, you have to prepare them by cooking them, in one way or another.

Baking potatoes in the peel
New potatoes are young potatoes that are about 2.5 centimeters long. Their skin is thin, so you don’t have to peel these potatoes. Of course, you can, but you will have so little left of the potatoes.
To bake potatoes you have to cook them first. About 10 minutes, without salt, what that the bantam does not absorb when the skin is still on.
Then you can cut the potatoes in half to fry them. You will get a nice crispy crust on the side where the potato was cut open. Put some oil or vegetable butter in the pan, let it melt and add the new potatoes. Toss the potatoes every now and then until you think they look nicely cooked. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper. If you want you can also add some dried thyme (careful, it’s too much quickly) or chives. There can be many green herbs with potatoes. Add these herbs last. Yummy! Taste to see if you think the potatoes are cooked enough after 15 minutes, otherwise, let them fry gently for a while.
Baking frozen potatoes
Frozen potatoes, which are pre-cooked, can also be baked, but in the oven. Set the oven to 200 degrees to preheat it.
Place the frozen potatoes in a bowl and drizzle some oil over them. You can add some salt and pepper after baking. Mix well so that the oil is evenly distributed.
Take an oven tray and place a baking paper over it. (A non-stick baking dish is also good as long as you can spread them out.) Place the potatoes on the baking paper and spread them out well so that they are well browned on all sides. If necessary, toss the potatoes halfway through so that the side they are on also browns.
They will probably be done after 25 minutes. Pierce them with a fork, every oven is different so they may need another 5 to 10 minutes. It’s a one-time try and you’ll know how long they have to last the next time.
The ‘small potatoes’ that are pre-cooked from the supermarket can also be taken out of the oven after 20 to 25 minutes. Taste them before taking them out. You can put salt and pepper on these potatoes before baking.
Baking potatoes with herbs
When you bake potatoes, nothing is more delicious than to season them. You can use a lot of spices with baked potatoes.
- Pepper and salt (of course)
- Paprika powder
- onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Cayenne or chili pepper
When you bake the potatoes, in sunflower oil or vegetable butter, you can add salt and pepper while baking. Paprika powder also goes well with it. The combination of pepper, salt, garlic powder and onion powder is also a tasty one (now I’m assuming). Cayenne or chili pepper is one to try whichever you like. I wouldn’t add green herbs to that.
If you want to use green herbs, you only add them at the end otherwise the flavor will be lost. Add finely chopped chives or parsley at the last minute and toss well. When using dried herbs, let the butter soak into the herbs for a while so that they are soft. Just toss and taste! Always taste what you think of your cooking and season when necessary. Toss well and serve!
Pay close attention to the amount of spices you add to your dish. Little by little and then taste. You can get to herbs, but you can’t take them out. I know that makes sense…

Potatoes First Cook Then Bake
We have already described it in baking potatoes in their skins, it is true, you first cook potatoes before you start baking them. Then we are talking about the real potatoes. The baking time is significantly reduced when you pre-cook them. They therefore do not burn because they do not have to stay in the pan or oven for too long to cook. It really takes a lot longer if you want to bake these potatoes raw, but it is possible. Cut them in half or into slices.
When you buy the ‘little potatoes’ from the supermarket, the ready-made ones, you don’t have to cook them. These can go straight into the baking pan or oven.
Baking potatoes with rosemary
When you bake potatoes in the oven with rosemary, you first remove the needles from the rosemary branch. You can cut it completely fine, but you don’t have to. You put a little oil over the halved potatoes, add the rosemary and toss everything together well. Place them on an oven tray lined with baking paper and bake them for 20 to 25 minutes. You can also put the potatoes with rosemary in a roasting pan, but it must be one layer otherwise the lower potatoes will not brown.
You can of course also ‘just’ bake the precooked potatoes in the baking pan with rosemary. The preparations are the same as described above.
Baking potatoes in oil or butter
It is a personal choice where you bake potatoes. I always like to use vegetable butter for several reasons. One of these is that the potatoes always get a nice brown color. Exactly the color I want. Sunflower oil can also be used. This oil can withstand the high temperatures of frying, but I always find the potatoes a bit greasy.
One is not better than the other, in terms of baking, it is a personal choice. Try out what you like.
Baking red potatoes
You bake red potatoes just like other small potatoes. This is described in this blog. They are and remain just baby potatoes, small potatoes. Only the color of the skin is different, and the taste is natural. It makes no difference in terms of baking, yellow or red skin.
