Can you freeze Ginger?

Can you freeze ginger? Yes, you can freeze ginger for about 2-3 months. You can freeze your ginger whole or grated in an ice cube tray.
We have described each of these two methods in detail below. In most cases, you won’t even need to thaw your ginger to use it!
How to freeze whole ginger?
The easiest way to freeze ginger is to freeze a whole root in an airtight container or resealable freezer bag:
- Start by peeling your ginger root. The easiest way to do this is to use a teaspoon. Scrape the ginger with the spoon to peel it without too much loss.
- Once peeled, put the ginger root in a resealable freezer bag or airtight container.
- Seal the freezer bag or container tightly, pushing out as much air as possible. Label the freezer bag or container with the date and contents, then put the ginger in the freezer.
- As soon as you need your ginger, you can grate it directly into your dish without defrosting it first. The grated pieces will be so small that they cook almost instantly.
Freezing whole ginger is very easy, but we recommend freezing it in small pieces 2 cm thick. This is usually what the recipes call for.
How to freeze grated ginger in an ice cube tray?
If you want to have grated ginger ready to use in the freezer, here’s a great method:
- Start by peeling your ginger root. The easiest way to do this is to use a teaspoon. Scrape the ginger with the spoon to peel it without too much loss.
- Once peeled, grate the ginger root with a cheese grater.
- Next, get an ice cube tray. Put about a tablespoon (or three teaspoons, it’s the same amount) of grated ginger in each compartment of the ice cube tray, fill with water to cover the ginger and put everything in the freezer.
- Once the ice cubes are frozen, take the ice cube tray out of the freezer and transfer the ginger ice cubes to a freezer bag. Seal the freezer bag tightly, pushing out as much air as possible.
- Label the freezer bag with the date and contents, then return the ginger ice cubes to the freezer.
- Whenever you want to add a touch of ginger to a curry, stew or soup, take an ice cube out of the freezer and add it directly to your dish.
What is the shelf life of ginger in the freezer?
Ginger will keep for about 2 to 3 months in the freezer . After this time, it will still be safe to eat but its flavor, texture or appearance may begin to deteriorate noticeably.
How to thaw ginger?
In many cases, you don’t need to thaw your ginger root! Just take it out of the freezer and grate it straight into your dish.
On the other hand, if you need a larger chunk of ginger, you’ll need to let the root thaw out so you can cut it more easily (hence the value of freezing your ginger root in chunks). All you have to do is put the ginger root in a bowl filled with cold water, and it will thaw in about 2 minutes. You can also thaw it in the microwave for about 15 seconds.
Can you refreeze ginger?
The flavor of ginger is mainly concentrated in the juice it contains. When you thaw it, some of that juice is lost, resulting in a loss of flavor. Frozen ginger is often a little sweeter than fresh ginger.
That’s why it’s best not to refreeze ginger and try to thaw only the amount you need.
