Easy vegetables to grow at home

Growing your own vegetables at home can make us more efficient and just take them from the garden when we need them.

Although not all types of vegetables are easy to grow at home with narrow land, several other types can be easily grown in pots.

1. Scallion

According to the book Let’s Plant Your Own Vegetables written by Zwenli Pramono (2019), planting leeks can be done from seeds or leftover scallions in the kitchen.

In order to thrive, leeks need to be watered every 2-3 days or depending on the weather in the environment where the plant grows.

The leeks are ready to be harvested when they are about five months old. The characteristics of leeks that are ready to be harvested are when the grass starts to grow and there are some parts that start to turn yellow.

2. Red chili

Planting chili can give us an advantage. Because, this vegetable is often used to make various types of dishes, but the price is quite volatile in the market.

There are many types of chili including curly chili, cayenne pepper, lado chili, vegetable chili, and ornamental chili.

Chili can be grown from seeds that we buy in the market or taken directly from ripe chilies.

These vegetables tend to be able to live when planted in both the lowlands and highlands.

In general, we can place the chili plant pot in a place that is exposed to direct sunlight for at least seven hours per day.

In addition, this plant also needs to be in a place that is protected from strong winds.

3. Green leafy vegetables

Some green leafy vegetables that are widely consumed by the community include kale, mustard greens, pakchoy, and lettuce.

Green leafy vegetables can be harvested when they are two months old.

To harvest it, try to remove all parts of the plant or cut only the top leaves.

After harvesting, do not forget to pay attention to the method of washing and removing dirt on the leaves and stems of vegetables.

4. Celery

Celery is commonly used as a vegetable to add flavor to cooking and also for medicine.

Planting celery in polybags does not produce large quantities, but it is sufficient for personal consumption.

The characteristics of celery that is ready to harvest is its lush leaves.

To harvest celery, we simply cut off the base of the celery stalk, not the saplings.

Celery that has been picked can be harvested several times with a distance of about 1-2 weeks after harvesting.

5. Tomato

According to the book Grow Your Own Vegetables: A Practical Guide to Growing 14 Popular Consumable Vegetables in the Yard, written by Cahyo Saparinto (2013), tomatoes can be grown anywhere, either in the garden as a single crop or in an intercropping system.

If we do not have enough land, tomatoes can also be planted in pots, aluminum gutters or paralon pipes.

This plant can be eaten as a fruit, made into juice, vegetables, sauces, or cooking.

Tomatoes should not be planted in places that are too flooded because these plants do not like places that are always watery.

In addition, it is better to place this plant in an area that is exposed to direct sunlight. Because, tomato plants that lack sunlight will not grow well.

6. Carrots

Carrots grow in an environment with cold and humid air temperatures.

The air temperature is too high (hot) can cause stunted tuber growth (small) and the color is pale and dull.

For good results, carrots need to be planted in a place with a certain height.

However, carrots can also be planted in the home area if for their own needs. This vegetable can be grown anywhere, which is important in the agro-climatic conditions according to the plant.

Make sure to provide space for root growth which will later become tubers.

So, if planted in a pot, make sure the depth of the pot is adjusted to the ability of the roots to spread.
